A GDO is a tunable oscillator with the coil mounted outside of the chassis. The external coil allows you to measure the frequency of a tuned circuit without any electrical connection to it. Tune the GDO to each of the IF frequencies, starting with the last and hold the coil close to that part of the circuitry.
